Broadband Fiber Installation (BFI) Curriculum

The SCTE® Broadband Fiber Installation (BFI) curriculum is designed to provide fiber installation technicians with the knowledge and skills necessary to support and maintain fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) and fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) networks. Through engaging modules, learners will explore the fundamentals of fiber optics, including its history, key characteristics, and safety protocols. The course also covers practical aspects such as fiber installation, tools, connectors, and troubleshooting techniques for residential fiber services. These foundational skills ensure technicians can confidently deliver high-quality service to cable customers using modern fiber access technologies.

The BFI curriculum is made up of six courses that focus on specific aspects of residential fiber installation. These courses are:

  • Fiber Basics
  • Residential Fiber Installation
  • Residential Fiber Troubleshooting
  • Ethernet Passive Optical Networks
  • Gigabit Passive Optical Networks
  • Radio Frequency over Glass

Format:

Self-paced interactive Online Course: Learners start the SCTE VirtuLearn® course at any time, study at their own pace, and have access to dynamic online content after they register. On average, learners will spend approximately 12 hours to complete all curriculum activities. SCTE provides access to the course for 1 year from the date of purchase.

System Requirements: A high-speed Internet (HSI) connection, Internet browser with HTML 5 support. For tablet or smartphone access, HTML 5 may be used for online eBook content.

Instructor-Led Onsite Boot Camp Course: The SCTE VirtuLearn® course may be delivered as an onsite boot camp over 3 days.

Certification

Upon completing the Broadband Fiber Installation (BFI) curriculum, learners will be prepared to earn the internationally recognized SCTE Broadband Fiber Installer (BFI) v2.0 certification. The certification is designed for individuals working in the cable telecommunications industry for a cable provider, contractor, or vendor installing and supporting fiber to the premises (FTTP).
